What is medical illustration?
A medical illustration is a visual representation that conveys medical or biological information. Illustrations help explain and clarify a complex subject in ways that words alone cannot. These images can be used in scientific publications, research grants, books, and many other places to reach both scientific and general (lay) audiences!

How long does a project take?
Every project is unique! The total amount of time for completion can vary based on your project goals. This includes illustration style, subject matter, audience, and timeline. Consider the following steps for creating an illustration:
This process can take anywhere from several weeks to several months depending on the scope of your project. If you are working on a tight deadline (less than 2 weeks), I am happy to discuss solutions with you during our initial consultation!
How involved will I be in the project from start to finish?
Every project is a partnership between client and artist! Most of our communication will occur at the beginning stages of the project. An initial consultation is held to determine your project goals. Frequent communication will occur during the sketching phase to ensure accuracy of information and concept. As the project is finalized, less communication is needed, but I am happy to provide updates at any point during the project! Consultation
We will have an initial consultation meeting to determine your project goals. This includes illustration style, subject matter, audience, usage rights, timeline and everything else that is needed in order to provide an accurate quote!
Quote
A quote will be sent to you within 1-2 business days. If you accept the quote, a contract will be sent soon after. Once signed, the project can begin!
Sketching
Preliminary sketches will be sent via email to ensure accuracy of information and concept. I will do independent research of your subject matter in addition to the resources you provide me. I may also contact you while the sketch is in progress to clarify scientific content specific to your work. This will give you an opportunity to request changes in the sketch regarding anatomy, text, and layout. The goal of the preliminary sketch is to finalize all conceptual and anatomical information, so your feedback is very important!
Final Rendering
Once you’re satisfied with the preliminary sketches, the final rendering will follow. Check-ins with the client may not be necessary at this stage, but I am always happy to provide updates when asked!
Additional Revisions
Small tweaks to things like color, position, size, and graphical/text elements can be made to perfect the final figure. Major changes such as adding anatomy, layout adjustments, or re-drawing parts of the piece can be made with an additional charge. Any additional charges will be discussed with the client beforehand, and no chargeable revisions will be completed without client approval.
Project Conclusion
Once final artwork is approved, you will receive an invoice, which is to be paid within 30 days. Once payment has been received, the final file will be delivered via email or digital download.
How much will a project cost?
Pricing of an illustration is determined by a number of factors including style of the illustration, subject matter, and the intended usage of the project. Since every project is unique, pricing can be determined per-figure, per-project, or at an hourly rate.
After our introductory meeting, I will provide an initial quote after discussing your project needs. If you have any budget concerns, don't hesitate to reach out! I am happy to work with clients to create projects that meet your needs while staying budget-friendly (e.g., using a simpler art style, simplifying the scope of the project, creating a payment schedule, etc.).
